Mellieha Air Raid Shelters, Malta
These air raid tunnels were hewn from the bare rock in the town centre of Mellieha, on the island of Malta. The strategic position of the island, commanding the Mediterranean, meant that it was on constant bombardment, and even besieged during WW2. This created a need for air raid shelters, which often consisted of re-used old forts and basements as were as purpose built tunnel systems such as this one. At around 1600ft long, this is quite an extensive complex and remains in remarkable condition. The tunnels are now open to the public for a small fee, and are worth a visit.
